MITLA: A JEWEL OF OAXACA

Continuing on the Oaxaca theme, here are a couple of shots from the town of Mitla, in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.  Here, as was commonly the case, the site was largely razed by Spanish colonizers.  The same stones were used to construct the catholic church.

OAXACAN PERCEPTUAL WONDERS

In late 2012 I found myself in a taxi in Mexico City with a fifty-something year old driver.  Our conversation followed a familiar pattern.  He asked me how long I had been in Mexico and which parts of the country I had visited.  I told him of my travels and he replied  that while that […]

CAFE TACUBA – EL METRO (TRANSLATION)

Cafe Tacuba is a Mexican band and this is their homage to the Mexico City Metro.  In case you didn’t know, the food and goods referenced in the song highlight the ubiquity of ‘los vagoneros’ – the roaming vendors who turn the metro into a mobile marketplace.  The version I’ve embedded below is from their 1995 […]

NIÑA CHILANGA (MEXICO CITY GIRL)

The street art across Mexico City adds a great deal of colour and beauty to the streets of the hyper-metropolis.  This image is from a street not far from Plaza Garibaldi in the downtown area – the home of Mexico City’s mariachi musicians.  I’ve got hundreds of street art shots from Mexico City and I […]

MEXICO CITY SNIPPET OF LIFE # 2: BUMDOM AND THE LORD

Homelessness is a complex problem facing people all over the world.  I try to understand a little more about individual cases of homelessness by sharing conversations from time to time with folk I come across on the street.  The gentleman featured is an ‘indigente’ that I met on the streets of the historic centre of […]

MEXICO CITY SNIPPET OF LIFE # 1: SON OF HERNANDEZ

It’s a bright Sunday morning and I am sitting in the shade on the fringes of a pedestrian thoroughfare engrossed in the sordid Parisian world of Henry Miller’s ‘Tropic of Cancer’. I raise my gaze to see Sunday strollers meander by.  Parishioners stream from the colonial era church, momentarily coagulating the flow of passers-by. A […]

PAQUIMÉ AT DAWN

In November 2012 I was very fortunate to spend a beautiful, calm and clear morning at the archaeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquimé) in Mexico’s largest state Chihuahua.  It was my last day in Mexico – a perfect start to the day before continuing en route to New Mexico.   I wrote this very short […]
