The elusive quetzal is the most fabled bird of the Mexico/Central America region. Unfortunately the only ones that I was able to spot were on the banknotes of Guatemala, where the unit of currency is also the quetzal.
The birds of the motmot family, with their colourful plumages and extended tails, are pretty spectacular as well. I was lucky enough to see this one and get a pretty good shot while visiting the Copan Ruinas archaeological site in northern Honduras.
I am no ornithologist but I believe this is a blue-crowned motmot.

Sin duda este hermosa ave es el simbolo de Mesoamérica, representación de los dioses Quetzalcóalt y Kukulcán, la serpiente emplumada, cuyas plumas se utilizarón para la confección del penacho de Moctézuma y el cual se encuentra en el conocido Museo de Ednología en Viena, Austria. lamentablemente esta ave esta en peligro de extinción, en México existe el aviario más grande de Latinoamerica, ubicado en Ixtapaluca, Edo. de México.
Me encantaría tener uno en la terraza de mi casa y que todas las mañanas me despertará con ese canto tan peculiar.
